CAPT Robert A. Goff, USN (Ret)

Robert A. 'Bob' Goff July 1938 - April 2017 San Diego - Captain Robert "Bob" A. Goff, USN. (Ret.) Capt. Goff was a man of faith and courage. He loved his family and friends, his country, the US Navy, and gave back to the community of San Diego. Sadly, a brief battle with cancer ended his life at age 78. His ashes will be interred at Miramar National Cemetery. Bob was born and raised in Long Beach and Compton, CA. He enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Compton High School and served on a variety of ships, staff and shore assignments as enlisted and commissioned officer from 1956-1996. He was a designated Surface Warfare Officer and held numerous Manpower, Personnel and Training assignments ashore. Bob received a diploma from the National Defense University in Washington D.C. in 1983, an A.A. degree from San Diego City College in 1962, followed by a B.A. degree from San Diego State University in 1965. At sea, Capt. Goff served on destroyers, frigates and aircraft carriers. His leadership skills were exceptional. He respected every shipmate he served with and made sure the sacrifices they made were necessary for a successful mission. His humor and integrity and were a model for all. He was known as "A Sailor's Sailor" and "A Captain's Captain." During his career, the Navy recognized his many achievements. He was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal (3 times), the Meritorious Service Medal (4 times), the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal with combat "V" and the Navy Good Conduct Medal, in addition to numerous other personal, unit, campaign and service decorations. Ashore he commanded Navy Readiness Region Southwest, overseeing the readiness of 8,000 Naval Reservists During his career he earned sub-specialties in Manpower and Personnel and Anti-Submarine Warfare Management. After retirement from active duty, Bob continued to work with the Navy serving on the Board of Directors for the Surface Navy Association, San Diego Chapter, Ombudsman for the Department of Defense, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves, member of the Navy Recruiting District Assistance Committee, and the Navy League of the United States, Marino Valley Council. Additionally, he served as Ambassador for Higher Education at his alma mater, San Diego State University. He held leadership roles in the San Diego Boys and Girls Foundation and San Diego Lions Club where he was recently inducted into their "Invitational Baseball Tournament" Hall of Fame, for his role as coordinator for hotel and travel. Bob loved his family above all else and worked hard to spend "quality time" with each and every one knowing how much they all missed each other during his many deployments. His role as a husband, father, grandfather, and uncle is a profound loss to all. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Connie Silva Goff, his sons: Rob and Tom (Ksenija), daughter Stephanie Goff Orona (Craig), grandchildren: Ryan, Keith, Harper, Luka and Luana. Memorial tributes in Bob's name to the Boys and Girls Foundation or the Lions Club will help those organizations continue to provide services to needy and at-risk children.
